I am always looking for new ways to save money. Beauty care is probably one of the biggest expenses for women because smart marketers know that we want to look our best and we are willing to pay for it. They convince us that we “need” their products to look younger, prettier, etc.

According to Allied Market Research, on a global scale, the cosmetics market size in 2019 was over $380 billion and is projected to exceed $463 billion by 2027. That is huge! They also stated that increased awareness about beauty by individuals is a large factor in the demand for skincare products.

Things to Consider

The first and most important way to help you save money on beauty care is to ask yourself a few questions:

  • Is there something I can live without?
  • What do I have left that I should use first?
  • Is there a less expensive brand I am willing to try?
  • What products am I out of?

These questions are meant to get you to think twice before making that purchase. Keeping your answers in mind before making a purchase can save you a lot of money. Use the money you save on beauty care this month for a better purpose such as paying down your debt, adding to your savings, or for a weekend getaway.

Eat a Healthy Diet

If you have been reading my other blog posts, you realize that I am a proponent of good nutrition. This is the best way to save money on beauty care. There are so many foods that are beneficial to your skin, hair, and nails.

If you are eating a healthy diet, it will help to keep your skin healthy and younger-looking, and you will be less inclined to purchase expensive products promising to reverse the signs of aging. If you want to save money on beauty care, eat a healthy diet, use sunscreen, and practice good skincare hygiene.

Cancel Subscriptions

Subscription beauty boxes can cost a lot of money. Do you even use everything that comes in that pretty box every month? Chances are you probably have a stash of products that you will never use so why keep spending the money?

Take a few minutes to think about the products that you thought were great. Once you have the products narrowed down, only purchase those individual products as you need them. You will be amazed at how much you will save.

We all like to be rewarded. Why not be rewarded for something you are already doing like buying beauty products? One rewards program I use is Ulta. You earn points for purchases and they reward you with cash rewards to use on future products. They also send you a special reward on your birthday!

Buy in Bulk

Buying in bulk can help you save money on beauty products that you use frequently. Shampoo and conditioner are two good examples. Compare the unit price of a regular size bottle to that of a larger bottle to see how much you can save. It may only be a few pennies per unit, but if you use a lot of the product, the annual cost savings can really add up.

If you are purchasing a product you have never used before, this may not be a good option. If a regular-sized bottle of shampoo costs $3.99 but you decide to purchase the economy size bottle for $8.99 but you don’t like it, you just wasted $8.99.

Gift with Purchase

Macy’s and Ulta are famous for enticing customers with free gifts with a minimum purchase. A few years ago, I purchased a Christmas gift for someone at Macy’s and kept the free watch for myself. You can always buy a gift for someone and keep the free item for yourself or keep it as a future gift for someone else.

My go-to for free goodies is Ulta. They almost always have something I could use. I have received cosmetic bags, tote bags, and other free products.

Buy Discounted Gift Cards

Buying discounted gift cards is a really great way to save money on beauty care or anything else for that matter. Sam’s Club has a large selection of gift cards you can buy for less than face value.

You can also purchase discounted gift cards at Raise.com. You can search by category, retailer, or discount amount. When you sign up, you get a $10 coupon plus an extra 10% off on your first purchase. Another great feature about Raise.com is the ability to earn Raise cash when you buy discounted cards on their site. Get the details here: https://www.raise.com/how-it-works

Once you have your gift card, you can maximize your savings by watching for sales and using cash-back browsers such as Rakuten or Swagbucks.

Talk to Your Friends, Sister, etc.

Have you ever bought something on a whim, but you were not crazy about it? Maybe it was the wrong shade. Maybe it caused your skin to break out or you had some sort of reaction to it. Or maybe you tried a product because of the hype but it didn’t give you the results you were hoping for. Whatever the case, it just didn’t work for you.

Talking to other women about their beauty care products can be very advantageous. Find out what they are using, if they like it, and why. It will save you the expense of trying a product you may not be happy with.

You should also ask them if they have anything they want to get rid of? Maybe you can trade. Invite them over. Tell them to clean out their stash and then swap items. Maybe you have one of their favorite products. It’s a win, win!

Take Advantage of Sales

This is a big one. When products you use frequently are on sale, that is the time you should stock up. Just don’t be tempted to buy something you don’t use. Before you purchase anything, check your supplies, and make a list of what you need.

Stop Purchasing Beauty Care Products at Department Stores

Instead of purchasing your beauty care products from department stores, shop at local drug stores or places like Ulta, Walmart, and Target. Chances are you will find all the products you need at much lower prices.

Buy Store Brands

I know what you are thinking, store brand products are just not as good. It may surprise you to learn that most times, store brands have all the same ingredients. Still skeptical? Next time you are shopping for beauty care products, compare ingredients and see for yourself.

Use Cashback Websites

Get cash back for online purchases at cashback sites such as Rakuten or Swagbucks. Either option is a good choice it just depends on your preferences. I do 99% of my shopping online and it is so easy to earn their rebates. Rakuten also offers rebates on in-store purchases.

Skip the Salon

Skip the nail salon and give yourself manicures and pedicures at home. There are many great products on the market that make home mani/pedis affordable and easy. You can still save a lot of money if you simply choose to go to a salon less often. If you get your nails done once a week, consider going once a month instead.

TIP: Buy gel nail polish, it lasts longer.

Frequent Discount Hair Salons

Getting your hair done at discount hair salons like Great Clips or Supercuts doesn’t mean you will be sacrificing quality. The stylists must have a license just like any other salon. The biggest difference is the price you pay. You will spend about a third of what you would at a trendy salon.

Afraid to try it? Talk to your friends, family, and neighbors. You may be surprised by the positive response.

Use Multi-benefit Products

Get more out of your beauty care purchases by purchasing products with multiple benefits. For example, CC creams work as a foundation, sunscreen, and moisturizer. You can also buy blush which has a bronzer.

Trim Your Own Bangs

Trimming your own bangs allows for a longer time between visits to the hair salon. It wasn’t that long ago that we couldn’t get a haircut because of the pandemic. I was going out of my mind! I didn’t have a choice but to give myself I trim. I must say, I did OK.

Color Your Own Hair

Getting your hair colored in a salon can cost about $100. If you get your hair colored once a month, that’s $1,200 annually! One box of hair color costs less than $10, that’s a savings of over $1,000 per year. I’m sure you can think of plenty of things to do with an extra $1,000 😊.

Ask for Samples

Did you know you can get free samples simply by asking? Next time you are at the mall, stop at your favorite department or beauty store and ask if they have any free samples for you to try their products. Try places like Sephora, Ulta, and Aveda. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Having samples to try is the ultimate way to try a product before making a purchase. In doing so, you won’t be wasting money on something you may never use again.

Put Household Items to Use

Did you ever think of using packing tape to remove blackheads? Or what about petroleum jelly to soften your hands and feet? How about removing makeup with coconut oil?

You can use packing tape instead of those expensive strips. Just apply a piece across the bridge of your nose and remove it quickly. Duct tape works well too!

Before climbing into bed, apply some petroleum jelly to your hands and feet and cover them with cotton socks and gloves. See if you notice the difference in the morning.

Skip the expensive makeup removers and try coconut oil instead. Not only is it less expensive, but an all-natural way to moisturize your skin. Use some on your hair too. It will help keep the frizzies away.

Use Coupons

This is a no-brainer for me. I always look at the flyers I get in the mail from my favorite retailers. Some retailers send better coupons to loyal customers while others may send coupons to customers who haven’t made purchases in a while.

Don’t forget to look online. Your favorite stores may have offers that you aren’t aware of. If you are not on the mailing list, sign up so you can get alerts. Many will offer discounts as an incentive.

Don’t Be Wasteful

Some people think they need a full handful of shampoo to wash their hair. But you really don’t. Overdoing it won’t make your hair any cleaner. And, when the bottle gets low, add a small amount of water to help move the product through the pump.

Another thing you can do to avoid waste is to cut the end off the tube of your product. This will make it easier to get more out of the package.

Tell Others What You Want

When Christmas or your birthday is near, make sure to tell others exactly what you want when asked for suggestions. Whether it is a specific product or a gift card from your favorite place to shop for beauty care. This is mutually beneficial because the person buying the gift won’t struggle for ideas and you are happy with the selection.

TIP: Give gift buyers several options. That way they can decide what fits their budget and there will be a small element of surprise for you

  1. The best thing I did for my skin and budget was to simplify my skincare routine and switch to drug store brand. Ibotta lately has had really great rebates on store brands. I will definitely keep in mind the discounted gift cards, that is a great idea! Thanks for sharing!

  2. “Eat healthy” is a great tip. I mean, more Vitamin C makes one feel refreshed, to be sure. Water is great, too, but we hear plenty about hydration.

    Thank you for this list!

  3. Thanks for sharing, I have always loved my skin care products and it`s one area in my life that cost the most.
Now you mention buying in bulk, but, moisturizers and lotions do have expiry dates,I think when buying in bulk it makes sense to pull together with friends who wants the same products.

  4. These are great tips! I picked up several ideas of ways to save money, like using petroleum jelly on my hands and feet instead of the fancy hand cream that I am currently using. Thanks!
