Discovering Your True Purpose In Life: 3 Questions To Ask Yourself

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” – Aristotle

Never in the history of the world has there been a busier time than now. With the advent of technology and the excessive use of our mobile phones, we’re constantly on call without even realizing it.

Being deluged with emails, social media notifications, news alerts, work, and family commitments and the myriad of other distractions that demand every minute of our waking hours has become the norm. It’s no wonder millions of people are stressed out and suffering from anxiety, depression, etc.

In the midst of all this ‘noise’ that pervades our lives, how often do we have time to discover ourselves?

No longer do people stop to contemplate their existence. We’re more reactive than proactive. We feel a need to respond to anything and everything even when a response is not required.

So how can you move past all the noise?

When it comes to discovering your true purpose, there are some signs that can help point you in the right direction. Here are three of them:

You frequently feel unsatisfied with your current situation

If you find yourself constantly feeling unhappy with your job, your relationships, or your life in general, it may be a sign that you’re not living in alignment with your true purpose.

When you’re living your true purpose, you should feel a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, even amidst challenges. If you’re not feeling that way, it’s a good indication that you may need to make some changes.

You have a strong desire to help others

If you’re regularly drawn to helping others, it’s a good sign that you’re on the right track. Your true purpose is likely something that will benefit others in some way. Whether you feel called to volunteering, fundraising, or simply being a good friend, making a difference in the lives of others is a key part of living a purposeful life.

You don’t feel like you fit in

If you’ve ever felt like you’re a square peg in a round hole, it may be because you’re not living in alignment with your true purpose. When you’re doing what you’re meant to do, you should feel a sense of belonging and connection. If you don’t, it may be time to reconsider your current path.

Of course, these are just a few signs to look for. Your true purpose is unique to you, so it’s important to understand who you really are and what you really want from life.

Questions to Help You Discover Your Purpose

Finding purpose is key to living your best life. So, you need to ask yourself, “what do I want from life?”  If one doesn’t know where they want to go, then just about anywhere will do – but you can almost always bet that they’ll never achieve satisfaction and will always feel like something is missing in their lives.

The 3 questions below will give you pause and help you to discover your true purpose in life.

What do I truly want?

This question is the MOST important question of the lot. You’ll need to spend time on it to understand your authentic self. Don’t use lifestyle images on Instagram to decide what you want.

Just because others seem to be having a good life in photos doesn’t necessarily mean they are. It doesn’t mean that you really want that for yourself either.

Spend time in solitude and discard whatever preconceived notions you may have and of course, external influences since childhood when people told you what you should want for your life.

Instead, ask yourself “what makes me happy?” “What makes my heart sing with joy?” Write it down and now you’ll know what to work towards.

13 Reasons Why You Should Start Journaling

Is what I’m doing helping or hurting me?

If you strongly desire to be slim and attractive, but you’re constantly moaning about people ‘fat shaming’ others on social media, is that action helping or hurting you?

It’s probably hurting you because you’re more focused on being fat than doing what it takes to get slim, which is what you really want.

The same applies to your diet. If you’re trying to shed weight, why would you be binge eating at night?

The answers to these questions are not to make you feel bad but to help you understand the thought process behind your actions.

When you realize that you might be binge eating at night because your diet is too extreme, you’ll then be a bit more relaxed with the diet, but still, control it.

What you’re doing should be helping you and in alignment with your goals.

Am I making progress?

Motivational speaker, Tony Robbins, often states that happiness is found in progress. That’s why people are often happiest when in pursuit of a goal and end up feeling dissatisfied once they get what they want.

The thrill of the chase is over. The happiness found in progress has ended.

All you need to do is set new, bigger goals and keep going. By tracking your progress, you’ll realize that you feel more satisfied and happy when you’re getting better and doing better.

Now you’ll understand why people stuck in dead-end jobs and never make a change often feel discouraged and unmotivated. They’re not progressing… and by not challenging themselves, they’re robbing themselves of happiness without even realizing it.

Writing Can Help You Discover Your True Purpose

Record your goals and track your progress in a journal, it makes a terrific historical record. Writing it down allows you to see the big picture, review your progress and see how much further you need to go.

It Will Take Some Effort

Discovering your true purpose in life can sound like a deep and complicated task. To make matters more convoluted, you’ll probably have beliefs that were foisted upon you since childhood, either by your parents or other adults.

The 3 questions mentioned above will force you to dig deep within yourself. It may be a fun process… or it may be a painful one. Either way, it’s a process that you must go through if you wish to discover yourself and live life to your fullest potential.

Oftentimes, discovering your true purpose can still be a little challenging for some people even after pondering these questions. While many people know they want to make a change in their lives, they don’t know what that change looks like or how to make it happen.

Life coaches are trained to guide you through the process and overcome barriers and limiting beliefs. They will ask questions, listen closely, and help you figure out the steps needed to get you there. Life coaches are experts in helping people achieve their goals and find fulfillment in life.
