Self-Care: 14 Simple Ways to Show Yourself Love

Self care doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, some of the best self care practices are simple, daily things you can do to show yourself a little love.

A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. -Proverbs 15:13

When my husband and I met with the pastor of our church to discuss our son’s baptism, one thing he said has been deeply imprinted in my mind ever since. He told us that we must first take care of ourselves, then take care of our marriage, and the rest will take care of itself.

As wives, mothers, and caregivers, we always seem to focus on taking care of everyone else but neglect to take care of ourselves. Do any of us ever stop to think who would take care of the people we love and care for if we were unable to? I think that most people find it difficult to put themselves first, but it is something that we all must do. Making ourselves our first priorities is not selfish and we need to stop thinking that way. We need to take care of ourselves first so that we are physically and emotionally able to take care of the ones we love.

Self-Care: 14 Simple Ways to Show Yourself Love

One really great way to practice self-care is to exercise. Physical activity can improve your health and reduce your risk of various diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Exercise can bring immediate and long-term health benefits. More importantly, regular activities can improve your quality of life.

Regular exercise will make you feel better physically and emotionally. With a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week, it can help you lower your blood pressure, reduce stress, and recover faster from illness and injuries. Physical activity also lifts your spirits and gives your energy level a boost. When bedtime rolls around, you will feel more relaxed and will sleep better after a good workout.

I know that it seems difficult to squeeze in a workout on some days. So, make the most of your time and do compound exercises, such as squats with an overhead press or reverse lunges with biceps curls. Compound exercises are very suitable for exercising multiple muscles at the same time. If you don’t feel that you can fit in a full 30 minutes of exercise at one time, you can break it up into 2-15 minute or 3-10-minute intervals. It still counts!

Another important way to practice self-care is to follow a healthy diet. Show yourself some love by eating a variety of healthy foods. A healthy diet has many health benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. It can also improve mood and provide more energy.

Here are a few tips you should follow:

Build strong bones by choosing foods that are rich in calcium. Broccoli, Greek yogurt, and low-fat dairy are great sources of calcium.

A healthy diet combined with regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes. Good sources of heart-healthy foods are those that contain healthy fats such as fish, extra virgin olive oil, and avocados.

A diet with a low glycemic load can help reduce symptoms of fatigue and depression. Staying away from foods with high glycemic levels such as pastries and other sugary snacks can keep you from feeling blue.

Foods that are high in antioxidants such as dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and berries can help reduce the risk of some forms of cancer. Antioxidants protect your cells from damage.

Eating foods that are a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, vitamin C, and vitamin E can improve your memory. Choose fatty fish such as salmon and tuna, walnuts, or avocados.

Maintaining a healthy weight is an important factor when it comes to disease prevention. Choose foods high in fiber because they will help regulate hunger and keep you from consuming too many calories. Some good choices are blueberries, cauliflower, figs, and flaxseed.

Admit it. Life in the 21st century can be crazy! We have all this technology, yet we find ourselves frantically running around, with no time to ourselves. The expectation is that we can do even more with all this technology. Slow down! We really don’t need to do more.

We should distinguish between the things we need to do and the things we want to do or don’t want to do. We don’t “HAVE” to attend every social function. We don’t “NEED” to see every hit movie. We shouldn’t overextend ourselves. It is okay to say no sometimes.

Permitting yourself to say “no” sometimes, will provide you with the opportunity for some much-needed time to yourself. What you do with that time is up to you. However, there are a few things that you should NOT do with “me time”.

  • You should NOT clean your house.
  • You should NOT do job-related tasks.
  • You should NOT pay your bills.
  • You should NOT cook.

Now here are a few things you should do:

  • You should treat yourself to a mani-pedi or spa day with your bestie. Top it off with a nice lunch.
  • You should plan a day trip or other fun activity by yourself or with a friend. We all need a little downtime to ourselves.

  • You should take a nap. Let the rest of your household know you need some rest so that they know to use their indoor voices.
  • You should read a book. Reading a book is a great way to redirect your mind from thoughts that may be causing you stress. It’s the perfect way to escape without having to leave the house. Feel free to stay in your jammies or yoga pants!

  • You should take a mental health day to relax and recharge. It is good for your body and immune system. Maybe you won’t need a sick day in the future. It’s better than having to take a sick day and really being sick.
  • You should unplug. Stop looking at your phone or tablet. Stay off Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tik-Tok, and Snapchat. Tune out all distractions and focus on yourself. Trust me when I say, you will be glad you did.
  • You should ask for help. Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of others when life gets overwhelming. Hire someone to clean your house when things get crazy. You hate cleaning anyway. And why not hire a neighborhood teen to help with yard work, shoveling snow, or walking the dog?

Practicing kindness can be expressed with words or actions. And we should all be kind to everyone, not just friends, family members, and co-workers. People will remember. They will take note. You might just make a difference in somebody’s day or maybe their life. Maybe someone was having a really bad day and your kind words or deeds was just enough to lift their spirits.

You can benefit from showing kindness to others. Acts of kindness can make you feel good. Just like physical exercise, doing something nice for someone releases feel-good endorphins. In addition, it helps us connect with others and build more positive relationships with family, friends, and even strangers. And good relationships help to reduce your risk of heart disease.

Kindness can also ease anxiety. It is one of the easiest things you can do to reduce anxiety. Small gestures, big rewards. Furthermore, it can reduce stress and help prevent illness.

Here are a few simple ways you can show kindness to others:

  • Tell someone you love them.
  • Hug someone.
  • Smile at someone.
  • Pay someone a compliment.
  • Volunteer
  • Bring a treat to work to share with co-workers.
  • Check on your elderly neighbors.
  • Call a friend who is feeling down or going through a tough time.

  • Help your new co-worker. Introduce them to others. Make them feel welcome.
  • Express congratulation wishes to new parents, graduates, etc.
  • Everyone benefits from kindness. So, let’s strive to treat others the way that we want to be treated.

“Give, even if you only have a little”. Buddha

Being generous isn’t just about being generous in a financial sense. You can be generous in other ways too. For example, you can volunteer your time with different organizations in your community. People will appreciate you sharing your talents to help others. And you will feel good giving to others who need help.

“It’s not happiness that brings us gratitude. It’s gratitude that brings us happiness.”                                              – Author Unknown

As we all know, gratitude is good for your overall health because it promotes a positive attitude. The practice of gratitude brings to the fore the positive values that are easy to be suppressed in a busy life.

Reflect on the things in your life. There are so many things to be grateful for, but sometimes we just don’t realize it. If we stop and take a few minutes and think about all the things we have in our lives, we are reminded of how truly lucky we are. What if we didn’t have these things? What would our lives be like? We are so fortunate.

  • Improves sleep quality
  • Reduces anxiety and depression
  • Reduces the risk of heart attacks
  • Encourages kindness
  • Promotes positive thinking/increases personal joy
  • Reduces stress
  • Enhances confidence

An easy way to practice gratitude is by keeping a gratitude journal. On the subconscious level, writing in a gratitude journal helps counteract our negative biases. It’s easy to criticize and focus on problems. For most of us, it takes an effort to appreciate and pay attention to the wonderful things in our lives.

Different Types of Journals-Find One That’s Perfect for You

By keeping a gratitude journal, you will develop a habit of cultivating gratitude and enjoying happier days. Translating thoughts into written words has an advantage over simply having thoughts: it makes you more alert and has a deeper impact on your emotions.

Start your day on a positive note by spending a few minutes focusing on the good things in your life and writing them in a gratitude journal. As time goes on, you will feel more grateful and experience more joy.

Another wonderful way to practice self-care is to get enough sleep. When we develop good sleep hygiene habits, it will be easier to get quality sleep and fall asleep at night. A good night’s sleep allows your body and brain to repair and recharge. Everything from your muscles to your brain is repaired with adequate sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep regularly, you will pave the way for health problems. Things such as an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and depression may be higher.

Make sleep a priority. I know, I know, there is so much to do and not enough time in the day. If I stay up a little later and wake up a little earlier, I can get more done. Well, you can get more done and still get the sleep your body needs.

Here are a few things you can do to save yourself some time:

  • Unsubscribe to unwanted emails. You will have less to sort through and be less tempted to read unimportant emails
  • Simplify your wardrobe. Stick to the basics with just a few items for special occasions. It will take you much less time trying to decide what you want to wear.
  • Use your electronic calendar. Add recurring events such as birthdays, anniversaries, annual subscription renewals, and vehicle maintenance to your calendar.  Set reminders for each recurring event, and then, you can forget about them until you receive the notifications.
  • Set up automatic bill payments. Once and done. Never miss a payment and avoid late fees and penalties.
  • Cook in batches. The benefit of cooking in batches is that you have several meals, but you only did the work one time.  You only prepped and cooked the food once and only cleaned up one time as well. Yay!!!  Now you have tonight’s dinner, a night of leftovers during the week, and possibly even some to put in the freezer.  I also make extra when cooking chicken or burgers on the grill.  I’ll use the extra chicken for salads, sandwiches, or quesadillas.
  • Use your dishwasher. Why are you washing dishes by hand when you can put them in the dishwasher? The dishwasher can be used for pots and pans as well.  Loading and unloading your dishwasher is simple enough for even small children to help with so don’t hesitate to instruct them.
  • Combine errands. Pick one day and get all your errands out of the way.  You will save time because you will already be out and many of the places you frequent are on your to-do list. Then stop for take-out on your way home as a reward for getting all your errands accomplished.

Now that you have more time, go to bed!

  • Helps you to find fulfillment in your life.
  • Guides you on your life path to achieving your goals.

  • Helps you unlock your creativity.
  • Can help boost your career.
  • Helps you see life choices from a more complete introspective perspective.
  • Helps to keep you accountable for your commitments.
